Litigation Director Lorianne Sainsbury-Wong Discusses Restoring Coverage to Legal Immigrants
HLA Litigation Director Lorianne Sainsbury-Wong discussed the current reintegration of legal immigrants into state-subsidized health insurance programs at the Massachusetts Bar Association (MBA). You can view the discussion at the MBA website [registration required].
The reintegration is a direct result of a ruling by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court in a suit filed by HLA. The case, brought on behalf of tens of thousands of low-income Massachusetts legal immigrants, sought to strike down a law passed in 2009 eliminating access to Commonwealth Care for legal immigrants who had been in the U.S. for less than five years. The Court ruled that the law was unconstitutional and ordered that those who had been unfairly denied coverage be reintegrated into the Commonwealth Care program.
