Divorce Judgment and Health Insurance Project

Separation and divorce can result in the loss of health insurance.  This problem is more acute for women and children, as they are more likely to depend on the former spouse’s insurance. With this problem in mind, HLA established the Divorce Judgment and Health Insurance Project to identify and eliminate barriers to maintaining health insurance after divorce.  HLA continues to advise low-income women in the midst of a divorce, as well as family law attorneys, on options for maintaining health insurance after divorce.  In addition to representing clients who have lost their health insurance after a divorce, HLA has conducted seminars and produced written materials for lawyers, judges, and women’s advocates in Massachusetts.

If you have questions or concerns regarding your health insurance rights after a divorce or separation, please call HLA during business hours at 617-338-5241 or e-mail us at info@hla-inc.org. Your inquiry will be referred to the intake attorney, who will contact you.

HLA’s guidebook, Staying Healthy: A Guide to Keeping Health Insurance After Divorce,  offers useful information to Massachusetts residents on health insurance rights, options, and resources.  To obtain a hard copy, or for answers to specific questions about post-divorce health insurance rights, please call the Intake Attorney at HLA (617) 338-5241 or 1-800-272-4232 X2980, or e-mail info@hla-inc.org.
