HLA’s Health Care Reform Defense Initiative fights to protect the rights of low-income Massachusetts residents that have been achieved under the landmark Affordable Care Act and the state’s Medicaid program known as MassHealth. Much of our work in this area involves helping consumers access health care by defending their rights in commercial and public health insurance plans, including accountable care organizations which are covering an increasing number of MassHealth members.

In this area of our practice, HLA lawyers represent vulnerable residents of every area of Massachusetts who can’t access the health care they need. We also are very active raising the interests of our constituency with federal and state officials who regulate parts of the health care system under the Affordable Care Act, the law governing MassHealth and other areas of state and federal law containing consumer protections. Our lawyers partner closely with a multitude of other advocates in our policy advocacy and together we have helped millions of low-income Massachusetts residents have access to health care when they need it.

This program area is supported by the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Foundation.
