HLA Wins Landmark Case, Gains Health Care Access for Low-Income Legal Immigrants
On January 5, in a case filed by HLA, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled that a state law barring 40,000 low-income legal immigrants from the Commonwealth Care program is unconstitutional and must be struck down

We are the only non-profit law firm in Massachusetts dedicated exclusively to health care access. With our parent organization, Health Care For All, HLA combines legal expertise with grassroots organizing and policy reform to advance the statewide movement for universal health care access. Health Law Advocates provides free legal assistance to hundreds of Massachusetts families each year.
Our clients are low and middle income residents from all parts of the State. Many are children, elderly, or coping with disabilities. All face barriers to health care treatment that result in suffering and loss. Last year, our small staff of full-time attorneys and private practice lawyers in our Pro Bono Legal Network panel combined to assist more than 850 families and individuals in obtaining access to needed health care. Day in and day out, HLA staff makes a difference in the lives of ordinary people who simply are unable to cut through legal, administrative or financial barriers to obtaining needed health care treatment.

The Boston Bar Association and Children's Hospital Boston released the third edition of "The Parents' How-to-Guide to Children's Mental Health Services in Massachusetts" in December 2011. HLA Child Mental Health Attorney Sam Leadholm once again served on the editorial board charged with updating this highly valuable publication. - New Consumer Guide for Individual and Small Group Health Plans
HLA, in partnership with the Commonwealth of Mass. and Health Care for All, have published a guide for consumers seeking coverage with individual and small group health plans.

Health Law Advocates' filed an amici curiae brief before the U.S. Supreme Court in "Department of Health and Human Services, et al., v. State of Florida, et al."
